The Metis Settlements of Alberta
Alberta’s Metis Settlements are unique. They represent the only lands in Canada governed by Metis and reserved for Metis use.
The land is protected in the 1990 Constitution of Alberta Amendment Act because
“… it is desired that the Metis should continue to have a land base to provide for the preservation and enhancement of Metis culture and identity and to enable the Metis to attain self-governance under the laws of Alberta.”
The transfer of fee simple to the Metis Settlements General Council makes it the largest single land holder in Alberta with over 1.25 million acres (roughly the size of Prince Edward Island) in protected holdings.
